Another Crazy NFL Rule Saves the Pats

Well, we pulled it out somehow. Baltimore outplayed us on offense and defense and special teams, and somehow we got the W. We were lucky, and luck favors a disciplined low-error team like the Patriots.

The worst point in the game was the Ravens stuffing Brady on 4th-and-1, only to have it called back because a Ravens coach had called a timeout just before the snap. Why are coaches allowed to call timeout? This is a dumb rule. Only players on the field should be allowed to call a timeout. The coach is not on the field, he is not a player, he shouldn’t be allowed to have direct effects on gameplay. Referees should only be looking at the field. It’s hard enough to call the game correctly, and now they are expected to be looking at the coaches to see if they are calling timeout? Even worse, it’s not just the head coach, apparently any old coach can call a “T”. This is a dumb rule, and I hope it’s changed in the offseason.

In the meantime, 12-0 baby!

  1. Coaches are in a better position to see, that doesn’t mean they should be able to call it. The fan in row 50 can see, the cameraman can see, the fans at home can see, etc. The point isn’t to have optimal timeouts called, it’s to restrict playing to the players.
Brady must have been kidding… he got stuffed bad!

  2. Are not the coaches on the sideline in a better position to see if the lineup on the field is not optimal and therefore they should be able to call time out to be able to correct a deficiency if they see one?
Was brady kidding when he said that he heard the time out whistle and therefore did not “really” try for a first down

  3. I’m worried. If the Eagles and Ravens are suddenly giving us trouble, what will the Steelers do? Remember, they were the team that broke our 21-game winning streak a few years back.

On the other hand, we have a knack of playing to the level of competition. And let’s say it like it is: We’re the Patriots, and they’re not. Damnit!

  4. pats definitely got their butts kicked last night in all areas of the game, but the fact that they pulled it off was really impressive. If they were playing at Pittsburgh next week, I would say they would be in for an upset, but since they’re at home, I think they’ll finish the regular season perfect. Their biggest threat is a good run offense…defense wasn’t impressive at all yesterday.
