Confused by the subprime crisis? Let some stick figures explain it to you.

I loved Nickel & Dimed. This book is a response to it, showing how possible it is to get out of poverty if you are at all determined to do so.

A very interesting call-in discussion about atheism and faith.

  1. Funk,

I lost the link, but there was a good interview with him. He is well aware of all the advantages he has, and isn’t pretending that it’s a perfectly fair comparison.

But your points apply as well to Nickel & Dimed. She writes about the advantages she has, from a lifetime of protein and exercise and a safety net that exists.

Someone else said the difference is that Nickel & Dimed wanted to fail to prove a point, and this guy wanted to succeed to prove a point. At any rate, it casts doubts on the inevitability of the experiences in Nicel & Dimed.

  2. By the way, that book is fucking ridiculous. It’s an experiment conducted by an able-minded and able-bodied college graduate who is perfectly aware of and capable of reaching the avenues by which one escapes poverty. And even if he held himself to a strict set of rules, it is always easier to do something when you know that a safety net exisits that you can run to if you really need to, even if you never really do.
